The extent of “V’Kidashto”

The Torah instructs us to sanctify the Kohanim, the priestly family that is designated to serve in the Bais Hamikdash. What is included in this obligation? Does it simply mean to ensure that there be Kohanim who are prepared to serve, or is this a much broader obligation to show honor to Kohanim? If so, where does this obligation apply? Can I ask a Kohen to pass the salt? Additionally, to what extent are we obligated to ensure that Kohanim keep the mitzvos that they were specially commanded?
